Grout Color Sealing

What is Grout?

What Is Tile Grout Color Cleaning and Everything You Should Know About

In general, grout is a mixture of cement, water, and sand and concrete which finds its applications in filling gaps. It find wide uses in masonry walls, for connecting precast concrete, and for sealing the joints between tiles. It is often tinted with color to make it visible with the tiles. Grouts also form a waterproof seal over the tiles. It is thinner than its counterpart mortar which is a thick emulsion and hardens over time.

Kinds of Tile Grouts

Tiling grout is either cement-based or epoxy-based.

1. Cement-based Grouts

The cement-based grout can be either sanded or un-sanded. The un-sanded grout is made by mixing Portland cement, water and pigments. This is used for narrowing the spaces of one-eighth inch and less. Sanded tile grout is used for larger joints by adding sand to the mixture which improves bulk and prevents shrinkage. For maintaining integrity, both kinds of grouts need grout sealers.

2. Epoxy-based Tile Grout

It is made of a mixture of resin and hardener and can be either sanded or un-sanded. It is particularly useful for tile grout because of its waterproof and resistant properties. Moreover, it has longer shelf life.

Which One Should You Choose?

It depends on your tile installation project and your own personal preference. However, you must be aware of their characteristics that will help you to take the right decision

1. Cement Grout

It has a pudding-like structure which is easy to apply. Therefore, it can be advantageously used for grouting of round edges, corners, and curves. Because of the existence of porosity, it needs a grout sealer. You will not find it useful for applying in places like bathroom or kitchen where water or potential contaminants are more likely to exist.

2. Epoxy Grout

Epoxy grouts inherently resist stains, water, grease, and acids. Hence, where cement falters, it works the best. However, the con is that it is a little harder while applying and once set; it is too difficult to remove. The worst part of it is when finished, it may display a plastic-like and rubbery appearance that may be displeasing to you.
